How to Build your Credibility as a Freelancer

Testimonials regarding the advantages of freelancing abound as more and more people are turning to it not only as part-time jobs but as full-time ones. While many are indeed gaining much success from freelancing, neophytes may have difficulty establishing themselves especially at the beginning of their new careers. There is, after all, a lot of competition to be reckoned with especially with the presence of established freelancers; and building one’s credibility in this vast sea of talents may prove daunting. New freelancers need not to be discouraged nonetheless since there are ways on how they can project their credibility too.

Create a great portfolio

Just like when you are applying for a regular job, the quality of your “resume” or portfolio will play a key factor in gaining the interest of potential clients. Provide useful information about your educational background, skills and achievements which can be useful for potential projects. With a resume or portfolio highlighting your skills and achievements, clients will see the pattern or consistency in your capabilities and this will give them the idea that you are right for a particular job.

Don’t spread yourself too thin

This is a common mistake among first-time freelancers. They are so eager for projects that they make themselves available for a multitude of unrelated projects. While it may seem a great idea (versatility), it really isn’t because it shows a “jack-of-all-trades” image. While this works for established freelancers, it simply evokes a sense of inconsistency for beginners since there seems to be no area of specific specialization or direction on their part. Start with one line of specialization and concentrate on that for a little while. When you have already established yourself, you can take on different types of projects.

Be realistic with your rates

Don’t sell yourself short on the monetary benefits but at the same time do not charge far too much for your services: just be realistic and flexible about the entire thing since you are just beginning to carve yourself a niche in the freelancing industry. Avoid negotiating if clients have already specified the rates. If you feel you’re being sold short, say no and look for another project with a more reasonable rate—as simple as that. The last thing you want is for clients to see you as complaining.

Gaining credibility takes time but you can make a good start with these tips. Try them today!
